Season 1 Recap

I just want to thank every single one of you for making Lokomotiva what it has become in such a short time. We definitely had our highs and lows this season, but were always a progressing team. Losing in the championship is nothing to be frowned upon. Quite the opposite actually. Be proud of what we accomplished both on and off the ice. Winning hockey is obviously our goal, but building friendships off the ice is also a huge plus.

Going into next season, we seriously have to keep our emotions in check (myself included). Even when we're blantantly getting the shaft by the refs; it does no good to scream like we manage to do at times and take uncalled for penalties. Just turns into a huge snowball effect against us.

The new season begins February 20th. We have some new faces that I cannot wait to see in action as well as bringing our championship runner-up core all back. Stay hungry fellas and let's finish the job this upcoming season.

Season 1 Championship: Lokomotiva @ Puckheads - L 3-2

This was it. The moment we'd been waiting for all season. In its inaugural season Lokomotiva Hockey Club was in the championship game. Nerves were high, expectations even higher. Win or go home.

The game was incredibly fast paced from the first drop of the puck. The play zipped back and forth, end to end. Both teams were playing with a fierce determination. As things heated up though, the whistles started blowing, and most were not in our favor. Much like in the game against The Brigade, Loko players started marching towards the penalty box. By the middle of the second period the Puckheads put up three unanswered goals, two of them on the power play.

Finally, after arguably outplaying the Puckheads to that point, Mike Kunkle scored a beauty of a goal up in close, late in the second period, and Loko was given some hope.

The third period was a frenzied battle, the likes of which Lokomotiva had never seen before. The defense was holding the Puckheads off of the scoresheet but they needed two more goals themselves just to tie it up.

With 2 minutes left in the game, and Loko on the power play, Anthony was called to the bench and at 0:54, with 6 skaters and an empty net, Matty Miller, the team's regular season leader in goals (and second overall in the league) scored to make it a 1 point game.

Anthony returned to the net for the face-off but as soon as we won it he came to the bench and Derek jumped on the ice. Loko, with 6 forwards and no defensemen on the ice,  threw everything they had at the Puckhead net and nearly scored on several occasions. Sadly though, the clock ticked down and the game ended.

While it's obviously disappointing to lose in a championship game, the reality is that someone had to walk away the winner. The sentiment in the locker room after the game was that we were all winners. To have made the championship game with a group of guys who had never played together as a unit prior to this season was a great accomplishment. And the fact that we've all become fast friends has been an added bonus.

Luckily there's only 2 weeks to wait until our next season starts. Loko will be playing KoSports on February 20th. See you all then and thanks for a great season!

Season 1 Semifinals: Lokomotiva @ The Brigade - W 4-3

After losing to them twice in the regular season, Lokomotiva made a loud statement last night to their arch-rivals, The Brigade. After 60 minutes of incredibly fast paced hockey, Loko came away with a 4-3 win to knock off the first-seed Brigade team and advance to the championship game against a yet-to-be-decided opponent.

Loko started scoring early and often as Rob, Derek and Sammy (2) put up 4 unanswered goals in the first period for a commanding lead. Everyone was staying focused, sustaining pressure in the offensive zone, and doing a bang-up job of clearing the puck out of the zone.

As is usual when The Brigade and Lokomotiva meet on the ice (with Bruce Kaplan as a referee), Loko had a parade of men going to the penalty box in the middle frame. The Brigade scored three times on the power play, including a 5 on 3 goal, to bring the score to within 1.

The second period ended 4-3 but Loko had it covered. Battles on the walls, battles in the middle of the ice...The Brigade kept coming fast and strong but the boys in orange stood their ground and kept winning the puck battles. With 15 seconds left and the goalie pulled, a face-off in the Loko zone gave the Brigade a flickering hope of tying the game. Pete won the face-off but their center put everything he had into it and the puck flew from the face-off dot straight into the catching glove of Mr. Martucci.  That killed about 4 tenths of a second. Loko won the ensuing face-off and cleared the zone for their first playoff win.

It was, by far, the best played game from top to bottom of the entire season. The offense was clicking, the defense was playing them tight. It was definitely a night to be proud of.

Puckheads play Direct Energy on Saturday night to decide who we play on Monday night. In the interim, it's time to sit back and rest up in preparation for the big game.

Until next time! #GetLoko!

Season 1 Game 10: Direct Energy @ Lokomotiva - L 6-4

On Sunday night, Lokomotiva dropped their final regular season game to Direct Energy in a 6-4 loss.

The game started out looking promising. Lokomotiva conceded the first goal to Direct Energy but Matty stormed back to score a natural hat trick in the first period, putting Lokomotiva up 3-1. Direct Energy made it 3-2 and then Robby D made bought us another insurance goal. Things were looking good.

And then they started to crumble. Direct Energy would go on to score the next 4 goals of the game on some sloppy plays by the men in cream and orange. A couple of ill advised penalties and a some stretch passes that got picked off turned into some great opportunities for Direct Energy and once they took the lead they didn't give up many more good opportunities.

And so, the first regular season for Lokomotiva comes to a close. Playoff hopes are still alive though. Average Joe's and Puckheads battle it out at 11:20 tonight and if the game ends in regulation, Lokomotiva will sneak into the playoffs. Overtime and we are out. Let's hope for one team to put up a ton of goals tonight.

Stay tuned...
